    The whistling needs to stop

I really miss the whistling. Maybe you can get into targeted advertising with the Today I Found Out (whistling) version with advertising for kazoos and a Today I Found Out (non-whistling) with advertising for noise-cancelling headphones?

As an addendum to my comment (I couldn't edit it, sorry) "scuttlebutt" is still used in the US Navy and it means "rumor(s)". Also, coxswain is pronounced "COCK- sun".

A question was asked about alcohol being served on Navy ships: the US Navy doesn't unless you are out at sea for more than 45 days and then it's only like 1 or 2 cans of beer. The RN (and most other countries' navies) are more liberal with alcohol on their ships.

Simone - you need to get yourself one of those traveling audio boxes like the host of Sword and Scale uses. Then when you stay with inconsiderate people that don't think about your recording needs you will have your own plan! I am trying to find the picture he posted, it's hilarious! Just sticks his head in a box and records!

Very enjoyable podcasts and today's edition was most entertaining. Regarding Canadians and road-rage: I've found it very evident in Ottawa, the nation's capitol, including speeding. Not sure why since Ottawa is a government town, so people shouldn't be in any rush to get anywhere. I suspect there's some correlation between anonymity and frustration/anger. I guess if you "peak behind the curtain", Canadians are far more angry than the friendly and polite image they like to portray.

Hey guys!! Love the show!! Usually. Today I was listening to the latest Christmas episode and found myself being assaulted by "bleeps." Have you developed a desire to no longer broadcast swear words? It made it hard to listen to as the bleeps are very jarring. I had to turn it off. 😞

Just listening to the last Christmas special episode, and i know its a super long shot but i have to ask, is the p-word that you were mistaken about 'penultimate'? just a super common word people mis-remember the definition of, and i am super curious so i thought i would give a guess.

Oh wow, I just listened to "Christmas traditions", found myself laughing out loud while at work. Hope nobody is wondering if I've gone insane. I wish I could leave a review somewhere but I'm not on iTunes or probably anywhere you'd look, but you really are the highlight of my week when it comes to podcasts. If you ever found the time and energy to upload the audio of your tifo videos as podcasts, I'd totally subscribe to that as well. And now for follow up: * Gävle is pronounced close to yeah-fle, stressing the "yeah". It astounded me as well when I moved here, no worries. (BTW the Yule goat is still standing at time of writing) * On the menu of your .fm website it says "Epsiodes" instead of episodes... Happy holidays and a fantastic new year from Sweden :)

I just want to say thank you for the best laugh I've had in recent memory. When Simon talked about the lieutenant pronunciation and Daven said "fantastic" I laughed till tears came to my eyes. There was so much experience and wry empathy in those few syllables—I had to go back and listen again. I want that as one of my text tones now.

Regarding "The Godfather" I made my thesis about it, and I haven't watched it.

Sorry for the delay in production. We recorded these a few weeks back, but had some issues that needed sorting before we could hit publish. 🙂
  17. Just listening to this episode now and I thought I'd weigh in on the whole does building on a swamp help with earthquake survivability. As far as I know it actually makes it worse. That kind of earth experiences liquifaction during an earthquake and provides less stability than normal earth. This happened in San Francisco in 1906.
  18. Naval mines look like spheres with projections surrounding it. We see them in war photos, cartoons, and minesweeper, but why do they look so funky and what do the parts do?

Why is it called an egg roll when there is no egg in the filling?

    The Truce

Just wanted to say that I'm in total agreement with Simon about two things he said in this episode. Firstly Die Hard is much much better than Star Wars. Also I have the same thing where I hate throwing away anything living so I also like to try growing those little basil plants you get from the grocery store.
  23. Years ago I read a book about the men that discovery the Haber–Bosch process, Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch. If I remember right it was called Alchemy of Air. From the details I remember they were polar opposites but both lived amazing lives. I always wanted to know more. This might make a good podcast topic.

    Women Listeners

Also weighing in - I’m a 27 year old female graduate student and I live listening! I found the podcast through your YouTube channel and it is honestly the first podcast I’ve gotten into and I’ve really been enjoying it. I listen to it at night to unwind after studying, on long drives and on planes. I feel like I enjoy your podcast for the same reasons most people have been saying, I just happen to be female (woo!) I really enjoy the interesting history - I think you explained the events leading to WWI the best I’ve heard. I DO love the macabre - what can I say, the gruesome is fascinating. I enjoy the casual banter and the tangents. I really enjoy the awkward transitions and when you congratulate yourselves on things like a good transition or a good sponsorship or complain about how much it costs to host. It’s enjoyable and so refreshingly transparent. It makes me feel like I’m listening to a friend’s podcast and I connect even more. Please continue to do slightly awkward and clumsy transitions between topics, I LOVE THEM. Finally : Simon, PLEASE ROAST MY REVIEW! (It’s on iTunes, shadowfax1300) It’s absolutely hilarious when you accidentally roast 5star reviews. I don’t know how others feel, but I love it.

Great episode! My favorite new piece of knowledge was the glow worms. The most entertaining was listening to Daven & Simon trying cold Spam. 😀 I was raised Roman Catholic and know why it's the 12 Days of Christmas, but I look forward to Simon's tangential meandering and Daven's side facts next time. 🎄
