Women Listeners

Recommended Posts

I love the podcast format - I checked out you tube channel and its alright too but I find the conversation of the podcast much more engaging.  I can't speak for all women of course but for myself, I use podcast instead of YouTube because It doesn't require my undivided attention.  I can listen to a podcast while driving when lying in bed while cleaning etc.  I, of course, am aware of Youtube but I don't have much luxury time to just sit and watch a channel.  If Youtube is playing it's on the TV and either my husband or children are using it and they are not watching what I want to watch.  My podcast is on my phone and I can engage and listen as I choose.  I feel like other moms/wives may deal with the same issues and this is why you have limited female audience on YouTube but I would love to see if other ladies feel the same.

I agree. I also don't want to speak for all women but in my experience I think it is hard for women to have the time to sit down and engage in something like youtube. I have a 2 year old and a 2 month old and a career and a house to take care of so I'm afraid multitasking is all I can do and the listen only format lends itself to that. I am a fan of the youtube videos as well I just don't have time to get to them regularly. I enjoy the banter of a podcast and enjoy the longer ones!

On a separate note, I also listen to a very popular true crime podcast that has an active community (SSDGM). It has been brought up several times in that community that the majority are women and we have discussed why that might be. The gist is that women think about and feel as if they are more likely to become victims of a crime (specifically murder) so we feel the more we know the better prepared we are to deal with situations thus helping with the anxiety. For example, if rent is incredibly cheap for a nice apartment, a man might think the neighbors are loud or something is wrong with the apartment that isn't obvious. A woman might think that the apartment is a part of a murder castle a la H. H. Holmes and therefore avoided getting murdered. ?

Sorry to be long winded and I'd love to see other opinions. Also, bring on the pole! I'm interested in the results!

I too am a huge true crime fan.  H.H. Holmes would be a terrible landlord!  Ha  After making this post the other day I also considered that women may enjoy the podcast because women love conversation!  I mean YouTube is interesting but not engaging in my opinion.  I love the open conversation, the banter back and forth and the longer espisodes are by far my favorite!

A thing I'm wondering about if the whole women don't watch edutaining youtube videos isn't a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy: I am subscribed to a number of educational youtube channels, but I never get recommendations for other educational content, just older videos from channels I am already subscribed to.

Another thing I will note is that podcasts are for when I'm travelling/working (I do mindless physical work) and youtube videos are for when I can sit and watch stuff.

Interesting point there. It is possible the algorithm has picked up women in general don't watch a lot of educational youtube, so simply is less likely to recommend those videos, even to women who do sometimes watch.

I’ve never been married and I have no kids.

I’m a huge fan of trivia and tend to listen to all of your YouTube videos rather than watch them. I have a hard time finding good educational ones usually because of their voices and/or music selections

I’ve noticed that I have to watch 4-5 videos before I receive recommendations.

Yours is also the only educational podcast I listen to.  The rest are pop culture and TV.

I end the day watching Top Tenz and Today I Found Out in bed. I look forward to seeing Simon every night between the new and sometimes random topics (me to duck rape anyone?) I can’t listen online during the day, so I’m new to the podcasts. I am totally devoted to the YouTube channels though! Good job!

Also weighing in -
I’m a 27 year old female graduate student and I live listening! I found the podcast through your YouTube channel and it is honestly the first podcast I’ve gotten into and I’ve really been enjoying it. I listen to it at night to unwind after studying, on long drives and on planes. I feel like I enjoy your podcast for the same reasons most people have been saying, I just happen to be female (woo!)
I really enjoy the interesting history - I think you explained the events leading to WWI the best I’ve heard.
I DO love the macabre - what can I say, the gruesome is fascinating.
I enjoy the casual banter and the tangents.

I really enjoy the awkward transitions and when you congratulate yourselves on things like a good transition or a good sponsorship or complain about how much it costs to host. It’s enjoyable and so refreshingly transparent. It makes me feel like I’m listening to a friend’s podcast and I connect even more. Please continue to do slightly awkward and clumsy transitions between topics, I LOVE THEM.

Finally : Simon, PLEASE ROAST MY REVIEW! (It’s on iTunes, shadowfax1300) It’s absolutely hilarious when you accidentally roast 5star reviews. I don’t know how others feel, but I love it.

I feel really late jumping into this, but I am also one of your female listeners. I have been listening to to Youtube Channels for quite sometime, and join the podcast train this summer! Love all of the content that has come from you guys!

I was discussing the topic of women loving murder/serial killer episodes, and we came up with the theory that it is because women are usually more involved when it comes to psychology. We had noticed a connection between women in jobs such as counseling and thought that maybe women enjoy getting into the heads of these types of people.

Also a bit late chiming in, I'm binge listening to the podcast to catch up and just heard about this thread. I'd put my money on the biased YouTube algorithm theory

I'm a long time fan of the YouTube channel and the vast majority of what I watch on YouTube is fact based shows and has been for years (SciShow, vsauce, kurzgesagt, pretty much anything Simon is doing, etc). Given how much time I spend watching these channels I get surprisingly few suggestions for new channels with this type of content. I'll spend hours watching TIFO/TopTenz, and then watch a handful of Tasty videos and all of a sudden I get cooking video recommendations from a wide variety of channels. But I never would have known about biographics had Simon not plugged it in other videos, YouTube never suggests it to me. I've struggled for a long time discovering high quality information based channels on YouTube.

Actually, I do watch a lot of Your Youtube Videos. But I don't think YouTube knows I'm female 😉 I usually don't bother with changing the default options when I set up an account. So maybe I'm not so only lazy Account person. I like the podcast just as well as the videos. It is the first and only podcast I ever listened to and the only reason I tried it was that I really like the youtube channel.

PS: The German pronunciation is usually awful, but it's kind of funny to guess what it should have sounded like.

PPS: I like the Space episodes

PPPS: I use Google Podcasts, is there even an option to write a review because? I couldn't find it

I would like to chime in and say it wasn't until it got mentioned in some videos and the podcasts that I found out these channels have mostly male viewers, which astonishes me because I find the content not remotely aimed at men over women... I mean, women like entertaining educational content too, right ????  I know I do.  And so many topics are covered that I don't see how it wouldn't appeal to all types of people at some point.  If it really is just youtube's algorithm discriminating, then shame on you, youtube.  I don't know if podcasts have an algorithm for recommendations too (this is my first ever podcast), but if they do I hope it is less silly and draws in more people.

If anything I am surprised more women don't watch/listen to both the youtube channel and the podcast just on account of the fact that the comments and scripts are never skewed toward just a male audience, like they don't sit there and talk about dudecentric topics, they often make humorously legit jabs at sexist (and racist, etc) people in history, lots of really interesting women are covered as topics.... I could go on but yeah, I like that the content is very not gender biased, it really is for everyone.  I often recommend the channel to all kinds of people.

I would like to add that, different apparently from many other women who have commented here, I drive around to different places all day for work so I started putting on the videos and just listening to them while driving (and also when I'm at home with nothing to do, or when I'm cooking or whatever, youtube is handy for that), and getting to learn instead of just being bored on the road is great, and now switching to the podcast while driving has been extra great because I don't have to listen to the annoying youtube ads XD

" which astonishes me because I find the content not remotely aimed at men over women... I mean, women like entertaining educational content too, right ?" Always surprises us too as I think we cover a wide enough array of topics to appeal to anyone, regardless of sex. Just for whatever reason edutainment stuff always seems to skew towards male audiences. Really don't understand why. 🙂  At some point I am going to bring on board a female host for some edutainment stuff and it will be interesting to see if the demographic data stays the same there or if we get a lot more female viewers/listeners in that case.

Oh, that would be very interesting, and also a great thing worth doing just in general!  Even just getting more women on for interviews if not helping host would be great, I really enjoyed the interviews you had early on, even if they were topics I honestly never thought I cared about, I found them really educational and interesting.  But showing everyone out there that us ladies can be edutaining as well would definitely be great.
